These motions place significant stress on the rotator cuff, increasing the risk of tears over time. Improper swimming techniques, excessive training, inadequate warm-up, or muscular imbalances can also contribute to the condition.

Rotator Cuff Tear: Presenting Symptoms

Rotator cuff tears are accompanied by various symptoms that can interfere with daily activities and swimmers’ performance. The most common symptoms include:

Persistent shoulder pain, particularly during or after swimming training or competitions.

Weakness or a feeling of instability in the affected shoulder.

Difficulty lifting the arm or rotating it outward.

A sensation of clicking or “popping” in the shoulder during movement.

Management Strategies

Therapeutic options for rotator cuff tears can be either conservative or, under certain conditions, surgical. Conservative methods include:

Rest and activity modification: Swimmers should rest the affected shoulder, avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain. Adjustments to swimming techniques or a temporary reduction in training intensity may be necessary.

Physical therapy: Specific exercises aimed at strengthening the rotator cuff muscles, improving flexibility, and restoring shoulder function.

Medications and injections: Analgesic medications or corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and relieve discomfort.

In severe cases, or when conservative measures fail to fully resolve the condition, surgical repair of the torn tendon may be necessary.

What can swimmers do to prevent rotator cuff tears?

Proper technique and training: Swimmers should follow and apply correct swimming techniques and train adequately to minimize shoulder strain.

Warm-up and cool-down: Prioritize proper warm-up before swimming and cool-down after training or competition to prepare the muscles and reduce the risk of injury.

Strengthening exercises: Include exercises targeting the rotator cuff muscles to enhance muscle strength and joint stability.

Balanced training and rest: Avoid excessive training and incorporate rest days into the training program to allow the body to recover adequately.

Listen to your body: Pay attention to warning signs, such as persistent pain or discomfort, and address them promptly by seeking medical advice.

Rotator cuff tears represent a significant challenge for swimmers, affecting both their performance and overall shoulder health.
