These factors also determine the healing time—that is, the period required for complete bone union and recovery of structural integrity.

Causes of Fractures

The most common causes of bone fractures include:

Trauma, for example, falls, accidents, or sports-related injuries

Overuse, continuous and repetitive mechanical stress on the bone

Osteoporosis

Genetic factors

Pathological factors

Other contributing factors

Symptoms of Fractures

Although pain is the primary and most common symptom of fractures, it is not the only clinical manifestation. Common signs and symptoms associated with bone fractures include:

Intense pain localized at the fracture site

Swelling in the affected region.

Difficulty or inability to bear weight or walk (in lower limb fractures)

Deformity or abnormal alignment of the affected limb

Mild or nonspecific symptoms that may not clearly indicate a fracture and often require clinical evaluation for accurate diagnosis

Diagnosis and Management of Fractures

In addition to a thorough clinical examination, the diagnosis of a fracture typically requires radiographic imaging and, in some cases, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for a more detailed assessment. Once the type and severity of the fracture have been determined, the most appropriate treatment plan is selected, which may include:

Use of a splint

Immobilization

Closed reduction

External fixation

Internal fixation

Intramedullary nailing

Other contributing factors

Healing Time

The duration of bone healing varies depending on the type and severity of the fracture, its anatomical location, and the treatment protocol followed. Healing time may range from several weeks to a few months. To facilitate proper bone healing, various methods can be used—such as casting, external fixation, internal fixation, and other surgical or conservative techniques. The progress of fracture healing is monitored at regular intervals through follow-up radiographic imaging.

Fractures can be prevented through simple measures, such as using proper technique, being aware of the body’s physical limits, avoiding high-risk activities, maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins, and engaging in regular physical
