It accounts for the majority of cases of leg and arm pain. This condition can affect young, middle-aged, and older individuals, as modern sedentary lifestyles appear to play a significant role in its development.<\/p>\n<p>Intervertebral discs are responsible for absorbing mechanical shocks and facilitating <a href=\"https:\/\/orthorehab.gr\/el\/nea\/item\/%ce%bc%ce%ad%ce%b8%ce%bf%ce%b4%ce%bf%cf%82-mckenzie-%cf%80%cf%8e%cf%82-%ce%bd%ce%b1-%ce%b1%ce%bd%cf%84%ce%b9%ce%bc%ce%b5%cf%84%cf%89%cf%80%ce%af%cf%83%ce%b5%cf%84%ce%b5-%cf%84%ce%b1-%cf%80%cf%81\/\">spinal mobility<\/a>. When these discs degenerate or sustain damage for any reason, the nucleus pulposus may protrude into the spinal canal, exerting pressure on the adjacent nerve roots. This mechanical compression often results in pain and neurological symptoms. In most cases, disc herniation remains asymptomatic and only causes clinical<\/p>\n<p><strong>Causes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The causes of intervertebral disc herniation vary, with the most significant including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age-related degeneration of the intervertebral discs<\/li>\n<li>Trauma to the affected region<\/li>\n<li>Improper lifting techniques, often related to occupational activities<\/li>\n<li>Motor vehicle accidents<\/li>\n<li>Falls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The symptoms of intervertebral disc herniation typically last for several days or weeks and often subside spontaneously. The most common clinical manifestations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/orthorehab.gr\/el\/nea\/item\/%ce%bf%cf%83%cf%86%cf%85%ce%b1%ce%bb%ce%b3%ce%af%ce%b1-%cf%80%cf%8c%ce%bd%ce%bf%cf%82-%cf%83%cf%84%ce%b7-%ce%bc%ce%ad%cf%83%ce%b7-%cf%80%ce%bf%cf%8d-%ce%bf%cf%86%ce%b5%ce%af%ce%bb%ce%b5\/\">Pain in the lumbar<\/a>thoracic or cervical spine<\/li>\n<li>Radiating pain in the lower limb<\/li>\n<li>Numbness or paresthesia in the lower limb<\/li>\n<li>Muscle weakness or, in more severe cases, paralysis<\/li>\n<li>Muscle spasms<\/li>\n<li>Urinary dysfunction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Diagnosis and Management<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In most cases, a detailed medical history combined with a clinical examination is sufficient to establish the diagnosis of intervertebral disc herniation. However, when neurological involvement is suspected, further imaging studies\u2014such as computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)\u2014are required to assess the extent and location of the herniation.Based on the imaging findings, the patient\u2019s symptoms, and the severity of the condition, the physician determines the most appropriate treatment approach. In general, disc herniation can be managed through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rest and avoidance of activities that aggravate the symptoms<\/li>\n<li>Physiotherapy program focused on stretching and strengthening<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacological therapy<\/li>\n<li>Corticosteroid injections<\/li>\n<li>Strengthening exercises targeting the spinal musculature<\/li>\n<li>Lumbar microdiscectomy surgery in cases where symptoms are severe and persistent despite conservative treatment.
